23 Jan 2005 - Ian Brown Hits Back

Ian Brown has responded to derisory comments from former Stone Roses bandmate John Squire in an outburst on BBC 6 Music.

In a recent interview with Q magazine focusing on the disintegration of the band, Squire had described the singer as a "tuneless knob" and a "paranoid mess". However, Brown has now hit back, mocking Squire's achievements since walking out of the Roses in 1996.
He told 6 Music: "For me, right, he split up the best band in the country at the time, the Roses, and he went on to do what? Nothing. Nothing to write home about - so he must be a bit bitter because he's got to watch me steaming forward."
Of his own solo career, he added: "There's no stopping it - I announce shows and they're gone in a day. It must be killing the kid. They say he was the best guitarist of his generation, which I think he is. Was. I hear his music now and what's happened to his guitar playing?"

Brown recently began playing Stone Roses songs in his solo sets for the first time since the band's acrimonious split.
He explained: "Do you know how that came about? Someone sent me a CD of a John Squire solo gig and he was playing a few Roses tunes. Man, it was poor. I didn't think he had the right to do that to the tunes, you know, cos he was singing them as well. I don't think you can step up to the mic aged 40 and cut it. I didn't think it was right, cos out of respect to the other three lads I'd never played any Roses tunes."

"I wanted to stand on my own two feet, so I kept away from the Roses and I just did my own thing, but when I heard that CD I thought 'That's out of order.' I thought, 'If he ain't got the respect then I'm not gonna have none no more so I'm gonna play them myself now.'"

Brown is currently planning a greatest hits for later in the summer. He will also be appearing at Ireland's Oxegen festival on July 9-10th. His new single "Time Is My Everything" was released on Monday (January 17th) and includes a re-recorded version of the 'lost' Stone Roses' song "Where Angels Play".

23 Jan 2005 - Brit Awards

The Brit Awards category for Best British Single has been extended to include nominations by The Streets, Natasha Bedingfield, Keane, George Michael and the Sugababes after organisers miscalculated the number of weeks in 2004.

The previous list only consisted of five entries from Band Aid 20, Jamelia, LMC Vs U2, Shapeshifters and Will Young.

In a statement made yesterday (January 20th), a spokesman explained: "It has been brought to organisers' attention that the 2004 chart year comprised 53 weeks rather than 52.
"To avoid any ambiguity, and in the interest of accuracy and fair play, the Brits committee has decided to expand the nominations list to ten.
"A happy side-effect of this decision is that the British Single nominations now look more exciting than ever."

The full list of nominees for Best British Single now reads as follows:

Band Aid 20 "Do They Know It's Christmas"
Jamelia "Thank You"
LMC Vs U2 "Take Me to the Clouds Above"
Shapeshifters "Lola's Theme"
Will Young "Your Game"
The Streets "Dry Your Eyes"
Natasha Bedingfield "These Words"
George Michael "Amazing"
Keane "Everybody's Changing"
Sugababes "In The Middle"

The Brits ceremony will take place on February 9th at Earl's Court.
