30 Sep 2005 - 80's Music News

MORRISSEY has signed a new contract with Sanctuary Records, the label he fell out with over his cancellation of this year's Isle Of Wight Festival. The former SMITHS frontman has almost completed work on recording a new studio album in Rome and the follow up to the million-selling 'You Are The Quarry' is reported to be shaping up to be a full-on rock album.

SPANDAU BALLET will release their first ever live album on October 3rd, 'Live From The NEC' is the partner release to the DVD of the same name although the track listing is different and was filmed at Birmingham's NEC in December 1986 as part of the band's 'Through The Barricades' tour.

STOCK, AITKEN AND WATERMAN
are to release a career-spanning compilation of hits from their Hit Factory on November 7th. The release will be a double CD and although the final tracklisting is still to be confirmed Pete Waterman has claimed that the release will be 'the definitive Hit Factory collection'.

CYNDI LAUPER has lined up a selection of US dates in November and December to support the upcoming release of her new album 'The Body Acoustic'.

KIM WILDE's classic 'You Came' has been sampled in an upcoming dance release from Groovenut. The release will be under under the artist name Groovenut vs Kim Wilde. Meanwhile Kim Wilde's classic single 'Kids In America' will be featured in the soundtrack for 'Daltry Calhoun', the upcoming new film from Quentin Tarantino.

NEW ORDER, DAVID BOWIE, THE UNDERTONES, ALTERED IMAGES, THE SMITHS, THE COCTEAU TWINS and THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN are among artists featured on a three CD compilation album of live session tracks broadcast by the late DJ JOHN PEEL. The album will be released on October 17th with proceeds going to support a number of charities.

SIMPLE MINDS
have already been announced as one of the acts on the bill of next year's T In The Park festival in Scotland... more festival dates are expected from the band who will kick off 2006 with an extensive European small venue tour.

SHAKATAK have arranged a brief residency at London's famous jazz venue Pizza On The Park from October 12th to October 15th.

SAMANTHA FOX
has announced the tracklisting of her forthcoming album 'Angel With An Attitude' which is set for an October 25th release in Canada with other territories being rolled out behind it.

ERASURE frontman ANDY BELL will be launching his debut solo album with a special live show at London club Electrogogo on October 6th. The performance will see Andy onstage with album collaborators Manhattan Clique, the trio being joined for a couple of numbers by PROPAGANDA and ONETWO singer CLAUDIA BRUCKEN. Andy Bell has announced more PA appearances in support of his upcoming solo album 'Electric Blue'. The Erasure singer will appear at London's Heaven on October 8th, London's Koko on October 15th and Birmingham's Nightingales on December 3rd.

KILLING JOKE's upcoming show at Amsterdam's Melkweg on October 3rd will be webcast live on www.fabchannel.com before being made available as part of the sites free to view archive.

BROS frontman MATT GOSS has revealed that he was recently considering giving up music, but instead has decided to continue making music for his fans on his own terms and without the usual pressures from the music industry. Goss is proposing to record one album a year which he will release on his birthday, and is also planning an album of cover versions. He is also hoping to do a few small low-key shows around each release.

SOFT CELL singer MARC ALMOND will play twenty-five UK shows as the special guest of former SQUEEZE mainman JOOLS HOLLAND. Almond, who is using the tour as a way of easing himself back into performing after last year's near fatal motorcycle accident, will provide guest vocals on the tour.

30 Sep 2005 - Madonna Samples ABBA

Madonna's new single, "Hung Up" will feature a sample of ABBA's 1979 hit "Gimme Gimme Gimme."

ABBA's Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have rarely deviated from their strict "no sample" rule for this Madonna single.

The only other artist to receive sampling permission from ABBA was The Fugees, who sampled "The Name of the Game" for their 1996 song "Rumble in the Jungle."

"Hung Up" is the first single from Madonna's upcoming album "Confessions On A Dance Floor," which will be released on November 14.

29 Sep 2005 - Morrissey / Smiths News

Morrissey has tried to end speculation that he had a gay relationship with former Smiths band mate Johnny Marr.

The rumours have been in circulation since the song writing team joined forces in 1982 when Morrissey was approached by the guitarist.

"There was a love and it was mutual and equal but it wasn't physical,” Morrissey said. "There are lots of people post-Smiths who would like to make some dramatic homosexual story. There never was one. It's often said that Johnny rescued me but he was also bobbing about in his own lifeboat."

Classic Smiths album honoured:

The latest issue of top UK music magazine Q has named The Smiths' 'The Queen Is Dead album as the Most Essential Indie Album in a section dedicated to 'essential albums your record collection must include'.

UK Chart Midweek

I've received a few e-mails from people asking what the midweek chart position is for Crazy. At the time of writing (Wednesday) the midweek position of Crazy is number 24.

If you??are planning to buy the Crazy single (either as the physical formats or the digital downloads via iTunes / HMV / Virgin) then it would be hugely beneficial to do so in this first week of the single release - a top 20 position is tantalisingly close at the moment!
