Madonna has apparently signed up to play a transvestite in a forthcoming movie.

Today's Sun newspaper reports that the singer is lined up to play the role of cross-dresser Candy Darling who was a face around Andy Warhol's Factory in the late 60s and early 70s. Darling was supposedly the inspiration for Lou Reed when he wrote the tracks "Candy Says" and "Walk On The Wild Side".

An insider on the project told the newspaper that Madonna is so desperate for the part that she has agreed to do it for nothing. They said: "Madonna has been desperate to make a film where she can earn respect for her acting abilities. She is still trying to shake off the bad publicity from the movie "Swept Away". She sees this as her big chance." The insider added: "She has wanted to play this part for so long because she feels so strongly about the character. She said she would do anything for the part and has agreed to work for free."

Darling, whose real name was James Lawrence Slattery, starred in the Warhol films "Flesh" and "Women In Revolt". He died of leukemia in 1974.
