23 Jul 2008 - 80's News

HEAVEN 17 will play a very special show at 6pm on July 30th when they play an hour long concert from the roof of Sheffield Hallam University's 12-storey Owen Building as part of the University's Fusion Festival. The show will also be shown live on a giant screen in the city's Hallam Square.

KAJAGOOGOO have announced a short German tour, their first proper tour since reuniting with original singer LIMAHL and drummer JEZ STRODE earlier this year, which will see the band play eight shows across Germany in November. See GIGS for all the dates.

KRAFTWERK are to play a one-off Irish date in September. The show, organised by Guinness heir Garech Browne, will be a tribute to his brother Tara Browne who was killed in an accident in 1966, inspiring The Beatles' song of the same name. See NEWS for more details.

DAVID BYRNE will embark on a 'The Songs of Talking Heads' US tour this Autumn, although contrary to press reports he won't be joined onstage by BRIAN ENO with whom he has collaborated on a new album (their first work together since 1981's 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts') which will be released to coincide with the tour.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK have extended the US leg of their reunion tour, will almost fifty dates confirmed in September, October and November, see GIGS for all the dates. The recently reunited band are also thought to have collaborated with NEW EDITION on a track entitled 'Full Service'...

THE PASSIONS' 1981 album 'Thirty Thousand Feet Over China' is released on CD for the first time this week.

The rumours are still flying around the world wide web regarding the upcoming single release of Kylie Minogues ‘The One’. Will there be a physical release for the single, will there be a video for the single, will there be any new ‘B sides’ if there is a physical release?

There certainly seems to be more interest surrounding the release of this single than there has been with previous ‘X’ releases. Promo singles have now been sent out to radio stations - with cover artwork that has received very mixed reactions - as for the rest, we’ll just have to wait and see.

We really hope that Parlophone get this one right for Kylie because if handled correctly it could end up being her biggest selling single from ‘X’.

ABC, one of the most original and enduring bands of the last three decades, are back with a brand new album, 'TRAFFIC', their first studio album in ten years.

ABC are one of those few groups who come along every generation to challenge the way music is heard and made. From 'Poison Arrow' to 'The Look of Love' and 'King Without a Crown', ABC always move the music forward, alert us to new possibilities and combinations, employ radical ideas yet keep the music fresh and relevant while maintaining a unique and instantly-recognisable sound.

Following the re-release of a Special Edition of iconic album 'Lexicon of Love' in 2004, lead singer Martin Fry is delighted with the new material "TRAFFIC is twelve brand new songs, and in 2008 it's a real privilege to be able to compete after 25 years of making music. These days there has to be a good reason to release an ABC record. It's a real labour of love. There's no point in writing a song unless you are inspired."
