Leaders of the Italian house music movement of the late '80s, Black Box was primarily comprised of club DJ Daniele Davoli, computer whiz Mirko Limoni and classical clarinetist Valeric Semplici, a trio of studio musicians known collectively as the Groove Groove Melody production team.

Acclaimed among the most successful producers in all of Italian dance music, Groove Groove Melody helmed dozens of singles each year at their peak; in 1989 they teamed with singer and model Katrin (born Catherine Quinol) as Black Box, debuting with the single "Ride on Time". Not only was the record a huge hit at home, but it soon crossed over into the British pop charts, landing at the number one spot for six consecutive weeks despite the controversy which erupted in the wake of the discovery that it included uncredited samples of Loleatta Holloway's disco single "Love Sensation."

A series of Black Box hits followed, among them "I Don't Know Anybody Else" (a Top Ten smash in the U.S. as well) and "Everybody Everybody" which featured vocals by Martha Wash.

The group's debut LP, 1990's Dreamland, was also a success. They returned in 1991 with "Strike It Up" another American Top Ten entry, as well as the Mixed Up! collection; additionally, the Groove Groove Melody team scored with material recorded under a variety of other aliases, among them Starlight ("Numero Uno") and Mixmaster ("Grand Piano"). After a long hiatus, Black Box returned in 1996 with the album Positive Vibration, which went largely unnoticed.

23 Feb 2006 - News From Onetwo

20th February 2006

Hello all. Claudia and Paul here again. My goodness it's really been ages since we've jumped on here! Well, there's been so much going on here it's been absolutely crazy to be honest! Firstly, news on Onetwo's album: Thanks to all the many people who have been emailing us with the same question " When the hell will your album be finished??' Well, we're nearly there(there)! Bob Kraushaar, who mixed 'Sister' and 'Cloud 9' for our 'Item' EP has been hired by us to mix the entire album, so the day after we've finished recording each track in our studio, we've been delivering him all the parts and he's been mixing the songs off one by one in his own mix room. It's been going really well too as we're really happy with and excited by his interpretation of our tracks! On top of all of the Onetwo album work, Claudia and Andrew Poppy have been collaborating again and there will be another release from them to be announced shortly too.

We've asked graphic designer Ian Hazeldine (thanks for all you do for us Ian!) to put together a new page for our website which will be dedicated to live gig information as we're currently planning our live shows for this year, all to be announced shortly. We can tell you now though, as it's just been confirmed, that we're playing Leicester Cathedral on Monday 28th August 2006 and tickets will be going on sale on Monday 17th April. Anyway, all the ticket details and further gig information will soon be available on our new gig page.

Paul here: There has been a lot of talk and rumours recently about me rejoining OMD and we've had a lot of emails from some of you concerned that if this happens, what exactly will happen to Onetwo? Well, nothing is going to happen to Onetwo is the answer, as I'm as dedicated as ever to what Claudia and I are doing, it's not just a project, it's a real band that we intend to make plenty more records for and as. I am however, going to be revisiting OMD on and off over the next few years as we have some really interesting and exciting live events planned, all to be announced over the coming months and will feature all the original members of the band!

Anyway, plans are being made, deals are being negotiated, dates are being pencilled into diaries, songs are being finished, and recordings are being mixed so there will be lots more announcements made really quite soon! We'll keep you posted.

One of the biggest announcements made by Metropolis Records for 2006 was the signing of electronic pop pioneer Gary Numan. The first release on his new North American home will be "Jagged", his first studio album in over five years.

Co-produced with underground electronic artist DJ Ade Fenton (best known for his Advanced Records label), Jagged is an aggressive, forward-looking album which takes the best elements of his previous work and gives them an anthemic, contemporary twist.

Jagged is one of the darkest and most electronic albums of his career, re-wiring the apocalyptic synthesizer pop of Numan’s own “Down In The Park” into something equally unique and powerful. Like his best albums it gets to the essence of Numan’s appeal - vocals that are alienated yet strangely soulful; a desire to push technology as far as he can and atmospheric sounds lashed to power chords and dream-like melodies.

Numan also mixes rock elements into the album through the massive anthemic choruses, especially on “Fold,” “Haunted,” and “In A Dark Place” - but they’re given a new potency through the siren-like wail of machines rather than guitars. Fans of Numan's more electronic-based songwriting will no doubt love the icy synthesizer hooks of standout tracks like “Pressure,” “Blind” and the experimentalism “Jagged” with the title track’s powerful synthesis of aggression and beauty conjured up out of machine-made noises and effects.

At a time when nearly all of his contemporaries have either disappeared or compromised to the point where they've lost their identity, Numan has pulled off an album which is heavy and dark, yet it also contains some of his finest songwriting.

Almost exactly three years after the release of their groundbreaking album “Futureperfect,” VNV NATION returns with “Matter + Form”.

Shaking off the conventions and clichés of the EBM and Futurepop genres, VNV NATION have taken the time to craft another release that can not just be considered an album, but a work of art.

Produced by world renowned German producer Humate and Ronan Harris, the man behind the music of VNV NATION, “Matter + Form” stands as a testament to the evolution of electronics-based music, and will in time be hailed as a benchmark for others to be judged.

From the haunting, quiet beauty of tracks like “Colours of Rain” to the introspective depths of “Homeward” and “Arena,” to the dancefloor anthems like “Chrome,” “Entropy,” and “Strata,” “Matter + Form” is an album crafted to move not only bodies on the dancefloor, but hearts as well. With every release so far they have changed the face of the genre, but with “Matter + Form” they haven’t changed it, they have completely re-invented it.

No longer just the best EBM band in the world, VNV NATION has now announced themselves as the new face of electronic music.
